IUPUI SCHOLARSHIP TO HONOR FORMER MAYOR BILL HUDNUT

INDIANAPOLIS - Two IUPUI faculty members, who are also former members of Indianapolis Mayor Bill Hudnut's administration, hope to promote the caring civic leadership they feel "Mayor Bill" exemplified through a new scholarship.

Sheila Suess Kennedy, School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) assistant professor and former head of the city's legal division under Hudnut, and John Krauss, an adjunct associate professor for SPEA and the law school who served as Deputy Mayor under Hudnut, have together established the William H. Hudnut III Scholarship in Public Leadership for an undergraduate student at IUPUI.

"The scholarship honors the legacy of Bill Hudnut and is intended to encourage excellent students to engage in public service at the municipal level -- to bring innovative and caring leadership to the local civic enterprise," said Kennedy.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student majoring in urban affairs or public policy who has shown, in the opinion of SPEA faculty, evidence of an ability to make a significant contribution to the urban community. An internship with the City of Indianapolis will also be an integral part of the scholarship experience.

Kennedy and Krauss hope to award the first scholarship in the fall of 2003, once the scholarship is fully funded.

Kennedy has been an instructor at IUPUI since 1996 and is the former executive director of the Indiana Civil Liberties Union. She recently co-edited a book entitled "To Market To Market: Reinventing Indianapolis," which is a collection of essays written by academic experts and public figures examining the actions of Stephen Goldsmith during his eight years as mayor. Kennedy is currently conducting a three-year study on the implementation of the charitable choice provisions of welfare reform legislation.

Krauss, who teaches at IUPUI in both the IU School of Law and SPEA, also helped establish SPEA's Center for Urban Policy and the Environment for which he is now a senior fellow, directing its many activities. He is also director of the Indiana Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations and project director in the evaluation of all riverboat casino applications for the Indiana Gaming Commission. Krauss is also currently a mediator and fact finder for the Indiana Education Employment Relations Board.
