SHOW TO RAISE MONEY FOR HERRON OVERSEAS STUDY PROGRAM
INDIANAPOLIS - Herron School of Art students who studied art on school-sponsored trips across the world are putting the artistic fruits of their travels up for sale so that future students can have similar opportunities.
G.C. Lucas Gallery, 4930 N. Pennsylvania St., is hosting "Herron Travels II" from Oct. 25-Nov. 15 to raise money for international travel scholarships for Herron students. The show opened with a reception on Wednesday, Oct. 25 and features student and faculty work influenced by international travel from the past five years. Students and faculty are encouraged to donate a portion of each sale to the school's study-abroad scholarship fund.
From 1979 until his retirement in 1994, Art History Professor Emeritus Ian Fraser guided groups of Herron students abroad. To honor him, friends inaugurated the Reverend A. G. Fraser International Travel Fund in his father's memory to provide travel scholarships to Herron students. From this foundation, Herron School of Art's international travel programs have grown. This year, the fund enabled seven students to each receive $2000 scholarships based on merit to attend a school-sponsored trip to China, France or the Netherlands and Belgium.
"Herron School of Art has long recognized the importance of travel and study abroad," said International Travel Coordinator and Professor of Painting Robert Eagerton. "We believe it is vitally important for artists to experience firsthand the cultural diversity and art of other countries. Students who have studied abroad find that it not only expands their knowledge of art, but gives them valuable insight into the world that totally changes their outlook on art and life."
Herron has the largest study abroad program at IUPUI. Students can currently study in China, France, the Netherlands and Belgium, and England. This year more than 40 students traveled overseas.
The gallery is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The gallery is closed Sunday and Monday. For more information, please call the gallery at (317) 255-4000 or Herron at (317) 920-2413.
