PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT RAISES MONEY FOR DISASTER RELIEF FUND
The psychology department has donated more than $1000 to the Disaster
Relief Fund. One-hundred students donated more than $500. The
psychology club and Psi Chi added another $500 from club funds
and from money raised through a parking permit raffle. The department
wanted to get involved to help those involved in the September
11 tragedy, to enable those who made donations to experience a
small sense of control over the results of a catastrophic event
and to provide a sense of community in the department.

Message from the Office of International Affairs and the office of the dean of international students
- Tuesday's tragic events have shocked and saddened us all. As we try to sort out what actually occurred, we are faced with a great deal of uncertainty. People respond to the uncertainty and confusion surrounding these types of events in many different ways. Some of you, as guests in our country, may feel uncomfortable and uncertain how to respond to Americans. Some of you may encounter some Americans who feel angry and suspicious. We want to reassure you that you are welcome at IUPUI and that we will do our best to answer any questions or address any concerns you might have about how these events affect you personally.
"It will take us some time to understand and to come to grips with the deeper meaning of what has happened. If you have suggestions about ways that our office can support you, please let us know. We want you to know that IUPUI as an institution is deeply and firmly committed to support of our students and scholars in their academic pursuits.

Resources for Faculty
Discussions of the Tragedy
- William Plater, IUPUI's executive vice chancellor and dean
of the faculties, is encouraging faculty and staff members to
explore the potential for follow-up programs based on particular
areas of expertise or skills.
- The executive vice chancellor also is encouraging classroom
discussions of the tragedy.
- "Many of you are aware of the need to attend to student discussion
of the tragedy within classes- even when the course has nothing
to do with politics or related intellectual materials. We encourage
you to accommodate such needs wherever you can without disrupting
course syllabi and learning objectives. This is a time when
faculty may be able to help students cope with a very traumatic
situation; where practical and useful, please encourage your
faculty to do so. The University of Michigan has developed guidelines
to assist faculty in such discussions, and I thought some of
your colleagues might find their information useful," he said.
- Plater recommends that faculty call upon Nancy Chism and the
Center for Teaching and Learning at 274-8880 for assistance
in developing appropriate ways to deal with the tragedy in the
classroom. Plater also recommends using the following web site:
