BIOTECH BREAKTHROUGHS FOCUS OF SPECIAL SEMINAR AT IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS - The region's leading scientists and researchers will discuss biotechnology's influence on the foods we eat, the treatment of genetic disorders, and the development of a cure for paralysis at a special seminar at IUPUI.

"Biotech Breakthroughs: Enhancement for Life," will take place from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m., Friday, March 2 at the University Place Conference Center, 850 W. Michigan St., on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

The Purdue School of Science Alumni Association at IUPUI and Premier Solutions, Inc. are sponsors of the seminar, the second in the annual Frontiers in Science series.

This year's workshop speakers are: Joe Petolino, advisor of plant transformation and gene expression for Dow AgroSciences; P. Michael Conneally, Distinguished Professor of Medical and Molecular Genetics and Neurology, IU School of Medicine; and David L. Stocum, dean, IUPUI School of Science.

Petolino will present "Genetically-Enhanced Crops: Variations on an Ancient Theme." Stocum, principal investigator at IUPUI-based The Center for Excellence in Regenerative Biology and Medicine, will discuss "Regenerative Biology and Medicine." Conneally will discuss "The Impact of the Human Genome Initiative on Human Biology."

Dr. Andrew J. Maxwell, a 1985 School of Science graduate, will present the keynote luncheon address. Maxwell, a pediatric cardiologist for California Pacific Medical Center, has been named the IUPUI School of Science Alumni Association's 2001 Outstanding Alumnus.

Frontiers in Science seminars highlight a topic of high scientific and national interest, and feature the area's leading experts. The series is designed to enhance educational and professional goals of IUPUI science alumni and other science professionals in the Indianapolis area.

The Frontiers in Science seminar is open to the public. Tickets are: $50, Friend of Science package; $40, Science Alumni and IUPUI Faculty-Staff packages; and $25 Student Package. Student package tickets include a continental breakfast. All other packages include continental breakfast and lunch.
