DESIGNING YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE

Are you just starting your career at IUPUI and want to know more about your retirement plan?

Do you ignore your retirement benefit because you are confused by investment strategies and other financial planning principles?

Are you worried about the fluctuations in the stock market and their affect on your investment selections?

Are you close to retirement and want to maximize your retirement income?

If any of these questions strike a cord with you, plan to attend "Designing Your Financial Future" sponsored by Human Resources Administration. Bring your spouse, bring your questions, and bring your concerns to the University Place Conference Center on Thursday, April 12 and hear from more than a dozen experts who will advise you about your financial benefits. This one-a-year opportunity is open to all IUPUI faculty and staff.

In today's ever-changing financial world, it is important to stay abreast of the latest information affecting your finances and retirement planning - whether you are retiring this year or decades away, it is never too early to chart your course. Invest your time now and reap the reward for the rest of your life. Wise planning will make your upcoming or distant retirement even better.

No registration is required; many of the presentations are repeated during the day to allow flexibility in planning your attendance.

8:30-9:45 a.m. PERF Retirement Plan, Room 134: A review of the Public Employees' Retirement Fund. Topics include contributions, PERF pension benefit, annuity savings account, eligibility requirements, vested status, service credit, retirement options, survivor benefits, and estimating your PERF benefits.

8:30-10:00 a.m. IU Retirement Plan-TIAA-CREF Investment Strategies, Room 137: Are you uncomfortable or uncertain about the investment selections you have made in your retirement plan? Are you wondering about whether you've invested in the right accounts or in the appropriate percentages? Along with an overview of asset allocation principles, learn about the TIAA-CREF investment options, sample portfolios, and balancing risks and rewards.

9:00-10:00 a.m. Introduction to Estate Planning, Room 206: A discussion of basic estate planning tools, including wills, trusts, living trusts, living wills, and power of attorney. Provides an overview of estate and gift taxes, including strategies for reduction or elimination.

9:00-10:30 a.m. IU Retirement Plan-Fidelity Investment Strategies, Room 102: For individuals who are greater than 10 years from retirement. The goal of this workshop is for participants to determine whether their asset allocation is on strategy with their future savings needs. The presentation also describes the importance of reviewing, reevaluating, and rebalancing your portfolio on a regular basis.

10:15-11:15 a.m. Long-Term Care Insurance, Room 232: Provides details on the Indiana Long-Term Care Program, how it protects your assets, and basics of coverage. Includes general information on how to determine whether long-term care insurance is for you and how federal tax law affects long-term care insurance.

10:15-11:15 a.m. Living With Social Security, Room 134: An overview of the Social Security System. Includes information about qualification requirements, retirement options, disability benefits, Medicare, and factors used in determining retirement benefits.

10:15-11:45 a.m. TIAA-CREF Seminar - Turning Your Retirement Accumulations Into Income, Room 137: Designed for participants within 10 years of retiring, this seminar reviews the various options available for receiving income at retirement. Learn how TIAA-CREF's retirement options provide you with a tremendous amount of flexibility. Topics to be discussed include the pros and cons of annuitizing your accumulations, systematic and fixed period withdrawals, and the IRS minimum distribution requirement. You've spent many years thoughtfully investing for your retirement; it's time now to learn how to maximize your benefits by selecting the income options that best meet your needs.

10:30-Noon Fidelity Seminar - Planning Your Retirement Income, Room 102: Participants nearing retirement can decide why, when, and how to best access their retirement savings. Participants will learn about the various distribution options available. At the conclusion, participants should be able to identify the pros, cons, and general tax implications of each option and have a firm understanding of which option or options best fit their needs.

10:30-Noon Health Care Options for Retirees, Room 206: An overview of University-sponsored health care plans available to IU retirees. Includes a description of eligibility requirements and a summary of the current plans.

11:30-1:00 p.m. Tax Deferred Annuities, Room 232: An overview of the tax deferred annuity voluntary retirement plan. Includes investment options, contribution limits, and the advantages of tax deferred investments.

Noon-1:30 p.m. Medicare, You and Retirement-The Knowledge To Make Good Decisions, Room 134: Medicare doesn't pay for all of your health care and neither does your retiree insurance. How do you know what your options are? How do you find your way through the maze of marketing and sales information? A representative from SHIIP-the Senior Health Insurance Information Program, Indiana Department of Insurance, will answer your questions and provide the information you need to make important decisions.

12:15-1:45 p.m. Advanced Financial Planning, Room 206: Describes how to build a diversified portfolio, tax considerations in investing and estate planning, and estate planning issues for higher net worth. Topics include death taxes, trusts, avoiding guardianship, and avoiding the erosion of your estate from nursing home costs.

12:30-2:00 p.m. Fidelity Seminar - Investment Strategies for Women, Room 102: This workshop provides important information specifically addressing the unique financial obstacles that women face. Topics to be discussed include: setting goals and formulating strategies to achieve them, minimizing the impact of taxes on your investments, evaluating investment risk and rewards, and insuring a secure retirement.

1:00-2:30 p.m. TIAA-CREF Trust Company Seminar - Customized Asset Management, Room 137: Do you have significant accumulations in both your retirement account and personal investments portfolio? This seminar will examine the considerations for customized asset management when coordinating your retirement and personal assets to achieve your overall goals. Topics include defining customized asset management, various investment philosophies, and how to determine if this makes sense for your plans.
