COME ENJOY THE MUSIC AT SCHOOL OF SCIENCE FALL SOCIAL SUNDAY AT IUPUI; HELP NEEDY INDIVIDUALS AT HOME AND ABROAD

INDIANAPOLIS - This year's School of Science fall social at IUPUI is a little bit reggae and rap, a little bit rock and roll, and a little bit mariachi. Plus it comes with the opportunity for the community and campus to help needy individuals at home and abroad.

The fourth annual School of Science Fall Fest will take place from 1 -11 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 30, on the open lawn area at New York Avenue and Blackford Street.

Ten Indianapolis-based groups are scheduled to perform during the event including Emerson Theatre regular Paradox 44, new rap artist Twan Journey, and alternative musicians LMNO.

"We could have had just one type of music, but we wanted to make it a multi-cultural event," said event coordinator and IUPUI chemistry senior Nathan Pedrick. "IUPUI is a very diverse campus. So we wanted to mix it up and have something for everyone."

General admission tickets, available at Ticketmaster and on campus, are $10 in advance. Tickets at the door are $12, or $10 with a donation of canned food. IUPUI students can purchase advance tickets on campus for $5.

Proceeds from the fest will benefit School of Science scholarship programs and the Sierra Leon Agape Voluntary Effort (SAVE). An Indianapolis-based organization, SAVE provides relief efforts in Sierra Leone, an African country recovering from an eight-year war that left two million people homeless, many children orphaned, and about 20,000 people maimed.

The canned goods will be donated to Gleaner's Food Bank that provides food for needy Indianapolis families.

"Our goal is to do a good deed for these charities as well as to promote cultural events in Indianapolis," Pedrick said.

Other bands scheduled to perform 30-minute sets during the IUPUI campus festival include the marachi band Zeleya, the Reggae group Dem Boyz, and Splitshift, a rock and roll band.

The School of Science Student Council, a campus student leadership group, is sponsoring Fall Fest 2001 in cooperation with Bliss Entertainment, Mars Music, Maxum Crane Works and the IUPUI School of Science Alumni Association.
