ELECTION 2000: HOW WILL YOU DECIDE?

Rick Shenkman,
writer, historian,
producer, journalist, & lecturer

Thursday, October 26th the IUPUI Honors Program hosts guest speaker Rick Shenkman, writer, historian, producer, journalist, and college lecturer. The title of his presentation is “Election 2000: How Will You Decide?” and is open to all IUPUI students. Faculty and staff are also invited to attend.

Rick Shenkman has appeared on numerous national TV shows including Prime Time Live and the Today Show and is a regular guest on Christ Matthews’ HARDBALL on MSNBC. For several years he was the managing editor of KIRO TV News, the CBS affiliate in Seattle, Washington. He is currently the managing editor of TomPaine.com, an on-line journal of opinion and is an adjunct lecturer in journalism at American University. Rick Shenkman is the author of five history books including: Legends, Lies and Cherished Myths of American History, which was on the New York Times Best Seller List for four months. His latest book is Presidential Ambition: Gaining Power at Any Cost.

Shenkman’s “Election 2000” presentation will focus on his “Seven Habits of Highly Effective Voters”. One of Shenkman’s steps is to “believe little of what anyone says on the campaign trail” and includes a look back at past campaign trails as evidence. The other six steps are entertaining, while truthful and reliable.

The presentation will help engage students in thinking more seriously about the Presidential Election. The IUPUI Honors Program hopes to encourage students to attend the presentation as well as an informal discussion with Shenkman later in the afternoon. The Honors Program hopes that this presentation, beyond introducing students to a thought-provoking and dynamic speaker, will promote civility and civic responsibility.

“Election 2000”, by Rick Shenkman, will take place on Thursday, October 26, 2000, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. in the University College (UC) building, room 115. RSVP preferred. Please contact Tabitha Cross at 274-2314 or tcross@iupui.edu.
