NEW
DEGREE AT IUPUI TO HELP FILL DEMAND FOR COMPUTER ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGISTS
INDIANAPOLIS
- The Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI will offer associate
and bachelor's degrees in Computer Engineering Technology (CpET) starting in
January 2002. These Purdue degree programs are for students interested in the
design, development and maintenance of computer hardware and software.
"Graduates of the new Computer Engineering Technology program may hold positions
such as software technician, automation technician, controls technician or computer
network technician," said Marvin Needler, professor and chair of the electrical
engineering department. "These graduates are in very high demand. The average
starting salary for those with bachelor's degrees in CpET are expected to range
from $50,000 to $70,000."
Students in the new program may take classes on a full-time or part-time basis
and may choose between an emphasis in telecommunications or industrial computing.
Students who graduate with a telecommunications emphasis will be trained to
design software and develop hardware for wireless web access, cell phones, computer
networks and more.
Students who graduate with an industrial computing emphasis will be trained
to design software and develop hardware for automated assembly lines, products
with artificial intelligence, and microprocessors which are embedded in items
including wrist watches, appliances, personal digital assistants.
