IUPUI OFFERS SECOND, BEHIND-SCENES LOOK AT "GIFTS TO TSARS" EXHIBIT AT ART MUSEUM
INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI is offering Central Indiana residents a second opportunity to experience an up-close and behind-the-scenes look at the glittering masterpieces included in the "Gifts to the Tsars, 1500-1700 Treasures from the Kremlin" exhibit.
The Gifts to the Tsars exhibit is on display at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) through Jan. 13, 2002. A second section of the four-hour IUPUI Continuing Studies Fall 2001 class about the exhibit will be offered from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., Thursdays, Dec. 6 and 13 at the museum, 1200 West 38th St. The first course, scheduled for Nov. 8 and 15, sold out.
"Exhibition Explorations: Gifts to the Tsars," a joint project between IUPUI and the IMA, features an expanded, guided tour of the more than 100 treasures from the Armory Museum at the Kremlin in Moscow. Attending the IUPUI class provides a unique way to experience the exhibit that includes gold and silver objects, precious gems, exquisite textiles and other treasures, two of which are the state robe of Peter the Great, and a silver and gilt eagle given to Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich in 1671 as a gift from the King of Poland.
"An exhibit like this takes three to five years to plan," said Rosie May, manager of educational programs for IMA and the class instructor. "The class is a more in-depth look at the exhibition. It is an interactive, discussion-driven experience."
Class members will learn what it took to arrange the exhibit and gain a better understanding of the significance of the individual gifts, many of which are being seen in the U.S. for the first time during the IMA exhibit.
The class fee, which includes the exhibit tour, is $38. Space is limited.
The Gifts of the Tsars class is one of more than 350 Continuing Studies classes currently offered by the IUPUI Community Learning Network. Continuing Studies offers courses in several areas including art and culture, business, computers, engineering, foreign languages, music and dance, money management, house and home, to name a few.
In several areas, such as computers, Continuing Studies offers a sequence of classes in certificate programs designed to develop competency in a subject matter. For instance, the basic web design certificate program provides the framework and basic knowledge for individuals who want to begin to design and maintain a professional-looking personal or company web page.
