HERRON TO HOST BIENNIAL EXHIBIT FEATURING HOOSIER CERAMICISTS

INDIANAPOLIS - The works of more than 30 artists will be on display at Clayfest 2001, opening at Herron Gallery, Herron School of Art, 1701 N. Pennsylvania Ave., on Jan. 10 from 5-7 p.m.

Clayfest is a biennial exhibition of contemporary ceramic art created in Indiana that is held alternately at Herron and the University of Indianapolis.

Guest Juror Stephen Carter, an associate professor of art at the University of Vermont, selected the artists who will participate and will award more than $5000 in prizes at the opening reception. Carter's own work will be presented in an accompanying display and he will give a brief slide lecture on Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. in Herron's Auditorium, 1701 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Carter's work has been on display at the Smithsonian, the African American Museum of Fine Arts in San Diego, and the Museum of African American Life and Culture in Dallas. He was a participant in the exhibition "Honoring Five African American Artists" sponsored by Sax Fifth Avenue in conjunction with the National NAACP Convention. He also co-authored a U.S. Department of Education publication "A Second Chance for Texans: Remedial Education in Two-Year Colleges."

In conjunction with Clayfest, Herron's new Sculpture and Ceramics facility, 1350 N. Stadium Dr., will also hold an exhibition entitled "The Ceramic Graduate Invitational Exhibition 2001." The exhibition will feature ceramic artwork from graduate programs across the country, including the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and others.

Herron Gallery is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. with extended hours on Thursday until 7 p.m. The gallery is closed Sundays. The Sculpture and Ceramics facility is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Both galleries are free to the public.
