CHANCELLOR FOR A DAY BRINGS ROLE REVERSAL TODAY FOR STUDENT AND IUPUI'S TOP OFFICIAL

A new student, with a familiar face, settled into his seat in ENG W231, ready for a session on Professional Writing Skills.

This student brought a wealth of experience with the subject, which focuses on writing reports, proposals, and analytical papers. Nonetheless, Gerald Bepko, like the other students around him, came prepared to learn.

Meanwhile, Isis Reyes, a freshman in University College, was adjusting to her role: Chancellor for the day of IUPUI. Her first meeting of the day was with Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance Robert Martin in "her" office in the Administration Building.

Coordinated by the IUPUI Student Foundation and External Affairs, the event is the first Chancellor for a Day at IUPUI. Last year, IU President Myles Brand inaugurated the program here. Students buy tickets for the chance to be Chancellor for a Day, with the proceeds going to student scholarships.

The day allows a student the opportunity to look behind the scenes and get a sense of the issues that a chancellor must deal with at a large urban campus. It also allows the chancellor to spend time with students and refresh his sense of the issues they face day-to-day on campus.

After the writing class, Bepko was off to Introduction to Human Geography in the Lecture Hall, and lunch with classmates in University College. An algebra and trigonometry I class and a tour of Lawrence Inlow Hall followed.

Wrapping up her meeting with Martin, Reyes, a biology student, went on to meet with Mark Brenner, IU Associate Vice President for Research and Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Programs; Cheryl Sullivan, Vice Chancellor for External Affairs; Karen Whitney, Vice Chancellor of Student Life and Diversity; and John Short, Executive Director of Conference and Sport Facilities at University Place Conference Center. She lunched with IU Trustee Dean Hertzler, was taken on a "behind the scenes" tour of University Library by University Library Dean David Lewis; and joined student Bepko on a tour of Inlow Hall.

A reception for the chancellor and student will be held in the basement level of University College at 3:30 p.m.
