IUPUI GRAD STUDENT CO-AUTHORS ARTICLE WITH STATE HEALTH COMMISSIONER; NAMED RECIPIENT OF AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN PUBLIC HEALTH

INDIANAPOLIS - An award-winning IUPUI graduate student was co-author of an article published in the Summer 2000 edition of "Traces of Indiana and Midwestern History," the official publication of the Indiana Historical Society.

"The Most Useful Citizen of Indiana: John Hurty and the Public Health Movement" written by Jeff Bennett, a history student in the School of Liberal Arts at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and state Commissioner of Health Richard Feldman, discusses the contributions of Hurty, Indiana's first public health director.

Earlier this year Feldman named Bennett as recipient of the Award for Excellence in Public Health. The IUPUI student is the first historian to receive the award, Feldman said.

Bennett, program coordinator for the Indianapolis program of Historic Landmarks Foundation, is working on a master's thesis about the history of public health in Indiana.
