IUPUI'S
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAMS LOSE QUEST FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, BUT SET HIGH
MARKS IN CONFERENCE PLAY; CARLISLE SELECTED TO ALL-MID-CONTINENT CONFERENCE
FIRST TEAM
The men's and women's basketball teams at IUPUI fell short against their opponents in Mid-Continent Conference Tournament semi-final matches March 6, but both teams went where no IUPUI team had ever been before.
The women's team won its first Mid-Continent Tournament game Saturday against Southern Utah to reach a semi-final match March 6 against top-seed Oakland. The win, was the first in three tries in the Mid-Con Tournament. The Jaguars lost 80-73 in second round play to Oakland.
The men's team edged UMKC, 54-52, Sunday, winning the chance to play top seed Valparaiso March 6. Playing in its first Mid-Continent Conference Tournament, the team lost, 65-54, to Valparaiso.
Arguably the best all-around player in school history, senior forward Don Carlisle (Indianapolis/Ben Davis) was named to the All-Mid-Continent Conference First Team, one of three Jaguars honored Friday by the league.
Carlisle, the only player in the league to finish the regular season in the top five in six categories, is the first IUPUI player to be named first team all-conference in the program's three years in Division I. A second-team selection each of the past two years, Carlisle received votes for player of the year and was selected first team by both the coaches and the media.
IUPUI junior forward Charles Price (Indianapolis/Broad Ripple), a double-figure scorer and one of the top shot blockers in the nation, was selected Second Team by the media while junior Sylvester Allen (Cincinnati/Woodward) was named to the All-Newcomer team by the media. The league coaches and media selected six players to a first team, six to a second team and six to an all-newcomer team.
The 6-6 Carlisle is the only player in the top five in the league in six categories: Scoring (fourth at 15.7), field goal percentage (fifth at 46.5), rebounding (first at 8.4), offensive rebounds (first at 4.04), steals (third at 1.67) and double-doubles (first with 11). IUPUI's all-time leading rebounder with 750, Carlisle is seventh in career scoring (1,315) and is just the second player in school history with 1,300 points and 700 rebounds.
Entering this weekend's Mid-Con Tournament in Fort Wayne, Carlisle has career totals of 68 games scoring in double figures, including 15 of 20 points or more, 27 games of double-figure rebounds and 23 double-doubles.
Price spent most of the year ranked in the nation's top-ten in shot blocking. The 6-8 forward is averaging 2.12 blocks per game and is second on the team in scoring (13.0) and rebounding (7.0) while shooting 51 percent from the field.
Allen, a 6-2 junior transfer, is third on the team in scoring at 9.4 points per game, while averaging 4.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and proving to be a stalwart defender.
The Jaguars, 10-17 overall, finished 6-10 and in fifth place in the Mid-Con.
