IUPUI faculty members are encouraged to promote a Letter to the Editor contest among their students. Students can win a $100 prize for publishing a letter to the editor in the New York Times or USA Today. Two prizes will be awarded.
For the contest, faculty members must assign a letter to the editor as part of regular class coursework and have students submit them to the newspapers. To participate, interested IUPUI faculty can include the assignment on a copy of a course syllabus and forward the syllabus to IUPUI Professor Johnny Goldfinger by fax at 317-278-3280 or e-mail at jgoldfin@iupui.edu. Faculty should submit the syllabus as soon as possible.
Rules and regulations for the contest are:
- The letter must be written by a student as part of regular course assignments.
- It must concern politics or matters related to public policy.
- It must be published in a print edition of the New York Times or USA Today by April 21, 2008.
- The winning letters will be based on publication dates. In case of a tie, the prize will be split equally between the relevant nominees.
- Nominations close on April 23, 2008, and the two $100 prizes will be awarded immediately thereafter.
This contest is sponsored by the Political Engagement Project, the Newspapers in the Classroom Readership Program, The New York Times, and USA Today.
