Black History Month Speaker to Discuss Blacks in Antebellum America
The African American & African Diaspora Studies Program and The Department of History will present a special guest lecture from noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, in the Ruth Lilly Auditorium, University Library, Lower Level.
Leslie Alexander, assistant professor of history at Ohio State University will present “We Are A Distinct People,” a lecture about Black identity in Antebellum America.
Alexander received her doctorate from Cornell University. Her current research explores nineteenth century Black culture and political activism before the Civil War. Her teaching and research interests focus on African Americans in the Early National and Antebellum eras. She is particularly interested in examining culture, nationalism, the creation of community, and the development of political organizations among African Americans.
