Medical Humanities Presents “Why Girls Go Wrong” Lecture
Seminars in Medical Humanities & Bioethics will present “Why Girls Go Wrong: Advising Female Teen Readers in the Progressive Era” from 4 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 31 in Lecture Hall Room LE 102, 425 University Blvd.
Jennifer Burek-Pierce, assistant professor of the School of Library and Information Science at University of Iowa, is the guest speaker.
Progressive Era professionals had the opportunity to read extensively about female teens in the popular and professional press of the day. One often-noted author recognized that young women were being studied by everyone from reformers and journalists, to psychologists and preachers. Some of this scrutiny concerned "Why Girls Go Wrong," a catch phrase for female sexual and social transgressions. This talk will examine how reformers' concerns about young women's sexual mores became translated into the popular lexicon of the Progressive Era, including reading guidance to young women.
The lecture is open to the public, but space is limited. Call Vanessa d’Amico at 317-278-1669 or email vkoepke@iupui.edu to inquire about seating.
