“Physician to the Astronauts” to Address IUPUI Community
What do smoke detectors, mylar, barcodes, wristwatches and battery-powered tools all have in common? They are all examples of secondary applications or “spin-offs” developed originally by NASA.
During a presentation at noon on May 19 at the University Place Hotel Ballroom on the IUPUI campus, Dr. Scott Phillips, a “physician to the astronauts,” will discuss everything about his role in the space program short of giving away top NASA and Department of Defense secrets.
Phillips, a 1990 graduate of the IU School of Medicine, was an Air Force flight surgeon when he joined the team trained to rescue space shuttle crews after a crash. His presentation at IUPUI will include insight into his role in the Space Shuttle Rescue and Recovery team and as a flight surgeon, and how the space program continues to impact our daily lives.
Cost for this luncheon presentation is $15.
For additional information, or to make reservations, please contact Danny Kibble at djkibble@iupui.edu or (317) 274-5060 or (866) 267-3104.
This event is sponsored by the alumni associations of the IU schools of Medicine and Nursing, and the IU School of Law-Indianapolis.
