Ethnic or Racial Immunity and Tuberculosis
University of Florida Associate Professor Mitchell Hart will present a lecture on the question of ethnic or racial immunity to tuberculosis during an April 7 presentation at IUPUI.
Hart will present “TB or not TB, that was a Jewish Question: Why were Jews Immune from Tuberculosis?” from noon to 1 p.m., Friday, April 7, in Room 508, Cavanaugh Hall.
Medical authorities in the 19th and 20th centuries were preoccupied with the question of ethnic or racial immunity to tuberculosis. Were Jews relatively immune to tuberculosis? How did those medical authorities who believed in the relative immunity of the Jews account for this? This lecture will explore one facet of the modern discussion about the relationship of modern medicine and Jewish law and ritual.
This event is open to the general public, but space is limited. Please call Kelly Canaday at (317) 278-1669 or e-mail medicalhumanities@gmail.com to reserve a spot.
