IU School of Liberal Arts Sabbatical Speaker Series Brown Bag Lunch
On March 10, the IU School of Liberal Arts is proud to present "A Model for Constructing Responsive International Education Curriculum" with Larbi Oukada, Ph.D. Professor of World Languages and Cultures.
While the rationale for mandating international education in US institutions of higher learning is well-intentioned and often non-controversial, there is a considerable hesitation concerning the outcomes of such instruction. The thrust of the present project is to articulate a set of curricular principles that collectively constitute a mechanism for selecting and prioritizing most responsively International Education learning objectives in US institutions of higher learning.
These principles call for a closer examination of the motives underlying curricular decisions and policies by raising and answering questions such as: How does one select International Education objectives? What are the necessary attitudes and skills that students will need to confront global issues? What are the criteria guiding the selection? And, to use “standards movement” language, what students should be expected to know and understand about the world, and about the US and its connections to the world?
This talk will be given in Cavanaugh Hall, Room 483 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.
