Sabbatical Speaker Series: Social Capital and the Quality of Government

The IU School of Liberal Arts Sabbatical Speaker Series featuring Margaret Robertson Ferguson, Ph.D., associate professor of political science, will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 16 in Cavanaugh Hall Room 508. Ferguson will present “Social Capital and the Quality of Government.”

Employing data from telephone surveys of citizen attitudes in eighteen major American cities, Ferguson and colleagues found that the prevalence of a cooperative spirit among members of a community contributes positively to the performance of city government. However, they found no evidence of a positive relationship between civic engagement and government quality in these major cities.
