Mongrel Nation: Race, Genetics & the Law
The Program in Medical Humanities will present “Mongrel Nation: Race, Genetics & the Law” at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 10 in Room 300 at the IU School of Law-Indianapolis.
Paul Lombardo, J.D., Ph.D., associate professor and director of the Program in Law and Medicine, Center for Biomedical Ethics, University of Virginia, will be the guest speaker.
While definitions of race have changed dramatically over the course of America's history, that same history suggests we cannot afford to eradicate the idea of race or use of racial categories in our laws. In contrast, since there is no coherent biological definition for what we have historically called “race,” great caution should be observed when race is used as a proxy for genetic difference in medical treatment and research. Lombardo’s presentation will address these issues.
This event is co-sponsored by the Center for Law & Health and the IU School of Law.
