HASSELL NAMED ACTING DEAN, KELLEY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS INDIANAPOLIS

INDIANAPOLIS - John M. Hassell, professor of accounting, has been named acting dean of the Indianapolis campus of the IU Kelley School of Business. Hassell will assume the responsibilities of current Dean Roger Schmenner, on sabbatical in Europe, until Schmenner's return in the summer of 2003.

A native of Midland, Texas, Hassell brought a variety of private sector and academic experience to Kelley when he joined the faculty in 1996. He worked with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. and served as manager of financial analysis for Olin-American, Inc., before deciding to teach. He came to Kelley after teaching at Baylor University, the University of Utah, Florida State University, and the University of Texas at Arlington.

Hassell has also published extensively in top research journals, concentrating primarily on the stock market's reaction to voluntary information releases by corporate management.

As acting dean, Hassell will continue to stress the importance of offering real-world business opportunities to Kelley Indianapolis students.

"I've always felt that our academic work must have relevance in the every-day world of business," Hassell said. "For the campus as a whole, that means giving our students as much exposure to real business environments and situations as possible. Our students are prepared to succeed, and that helps them pursue their careers and profits the Central Indiana business community as well."

John Hassell earned his Ph.D. and MBA from Indiana University, his M.S. from Oklahoma State University, and his B.B.A. from Baylor University. He lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Barbara, also a professor at Kelley Indianapolis.
