The winners of the 2011 Research Frontiers Trailblazer Awards at Friday's (April 8, 2011) IUPUI Research Day garnered honors for research on Afro-Brazilian religious practices, the biology of ovarian cancer, and the metabolism and reparative ability of bone.

Associate Professor of Religious Studies Kelly Hayes, Associate Professor of Medicine Daniela Matei, and Associate Professor of Physical Therapy Stuart Warden each received a $1,000 cash prize to support their research. Established in 2010, the Research Frontiers Trailblazer Award recognizes IUPUI faculty who are showing great promise in advancing knowledge in their fields.

What does the disembodied spirit of an unruly harlot in Brazil have to do with religion? As readers of a new book by Kelly E. Hayes, an associate professor of Religious Studies at IUPUI discover: everything.

The book, "Holy Harlots: Femininity, Sexuality, and Black Magic in Brazil," focuses on an Afro-Brazilian spirit entity, Pomba Gira, that plays a central role in the life of a Brazilian priestess with whom Hayes has worked in Brazil for the past decade.

IUPUI Names Zebulun Davenport of Northern Kentucky U as Vice Chancellor for Student Life

IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz today (April 8, 2011) announced the appointment of Zebulun R. Davenport as the new vice chancellor for student life at IUPUI.

Davenport, the vice president for student affairs at Northern Kentucky University since 2007, will assume his new position at IUPUI on July 1, 2011, subject to approval by the Indiana University Board of Trustees.

IUPUI Police Sponsors National Drug Take Back Location

To help address a vital public safety and public health issue, the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Police Department will sponsor a collection location on the second National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, April 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the IUPUI Police Department, 1232 W. Michigan St.

IUPUI Center for Service and Learning Celebrates 2011 Plater Civic Engagement Recipients

This year, the campus received three national awards including the Higher Education Civic Engagement Award, 2010 Outreach Scholarship W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award and the "America's Best Colleges" Award for outstanding service-learning programs.

The IUPUI racers who took the first and second place trophies in the 2010 Purdue Grand Prix have earned the second and third starting positions at this year's "Greatest Spectacle in College Racing."

The 54th annual Grand Prix will take place at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, April 16, 2011, at the track built behind the Schwartz Tennis Center off McCormick Road and Cherry Lane in West Lafayette.

IUPUI's Women in Technology Makes Debut with First Annual Networking and Career Day Featuring IU's First Lady, Laurie McRobbie

Female students pursuing or considering high-tech careers have a new resource on the IUPUI campus.

Students have partnered with the School of Informatics to organize Women in Technology (WIT), an organization dedicated to empowering, inspiring and developing female leaders in computing and technology. And they are introducing themselves to the IUPUI community on April 28th with the First Annual Women in Technology Networking and Career Day at the IUPUI Campus Center.
