Finding Lincoln
The nation is currently celebrating the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, Feb. 12, 1809.
As part of their required class work, IUPUI students in the Lincoln at 200 (History A421), taught by Professor Anita J. Morgan, visited Lincoln monuments around Indianapolis. Morgan's students are reading both scholarly and popular works about Lincoln's life, viewing films about Lincoln, and studying how museums, historic sites, and art interpret his life.
Following their visits to local monuments, the students wrote papers detailing how the statues were funded, when, and why they are placed at their locations; and how the local statues fit into the context of other Lincoln statues, memorials and monuments around the country.
Morgan also required her students to submit photos of themselves with the Lincoln sculptures as proof of the visits.
IUPUI students Debby Bartley, Tyne Swedish, Rich Usdowski and Amanda Preston are shown as they study Henry Hering's "Abraham Lincoln" statute at University Park in Indianapolis.
The students also studied David K. Rubins' the "Young Abe Lincoln" at the Indiana Government Center. David Rubins was the director of the sculpture program at Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI for several years.
