Purdue Professor to Present "Archaeology of Prostitution" Lecture
Purdue University Professor Nicholas Rauh will present "The Archaeology of Prostitution at Ancient Delos" at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, April 9, 2009, in the Ruth Lilly Auditorium at University Library.
Rauh, professor of classics at Purdue, has worked extensively on the Late Hellenistic Greek-Roman settlement on the tiny island of Delos in the central Aegean Sea.
In the second century B.C., Delos, recognized as the birthplace of the god Apollo, became the site of a luxurious international city where Roman and other Italian merchants mingled with their counterparts from the Greek east in the lavish exchange of luxury goods and slaves from east to west.
The city's destruction during the first century left behind the best preserved collection of Greek and Roman houses aside from those buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD. In his lecture for a non-specialist audience, Rauh will share an impressive array of historical and archaeological evidence to reinterpret some of these structures and shed light on an often unspoken aspect of ancient life.
The illustrated lecture is free and open to the public. Some content and images may not be suitable for children.
For additional information, contact IUPUI Professor Robert Sutton at (317) 274-2497 or rfsutton@iupui.edu.
The lecture is sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America Central Indiana Society in collaboration with the Program in Classical Studies, Anthropology Club, IU School of Liberal Arts, and IUPUI.
