American English Intonation Seminar

The Department of Pediatrics at Riley Hospital for Children has announced its next two courses of American English Intonation: Effective Intercultural Communication for the Healthcare Professional.

The program is designed for international medical students, residents, fellows, post doctorates and faculty at IU School of Medicine and Clarian Health Hospitals.

Two courses are available. The 12-week program for non-clinicians meets from 3 to 4:30 p.m., on Tuesdays May 5 to July 21. The 8-week program for clinicians meets from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursdays, August 6 – Sept. 24.

The goal of this instruction is to make each participant’s speech more comprehensible through modification – not elimination – of the international accent.

Diversity Trainer to Discuss Anatomy of Prejudice

(Correction: An announcement in the March 9, 2009, edition of Inside IUPUI incorrectly reported the time for the Jane Elliott lecture on March 24. The correct time is 3 p.m.)

Jane Elliott, a well-renowned educator, lecturer, and diversity trainer, will present "The Anatomy of Prejudice" at 3 p.m. on March 24, 2009, in Room 450 of the IUPUI Campus Center. During this three-hour presentation, Elliott will address the problem of bias and will highlight what can be done to decrease biased attitudes and behaviors.

Elliott created controversy with her "Blue Eyes Brown Eyes" exercise which she devised in response to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. In this exercise, Elliott demonstrated to her third grade class the negative effects of bias by suggesting their inferiority or superiority based on the color of their eyes.

This event is sponsored by Psi Chi (The National Honor Society in Psychology); The Psychology Club; the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Campus and Community Life; The Student Activity and Programming Board; and the Purdue School of Science Student Council.

This event is free and open to the public.
