Message from IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz:

Colleagues,

Last week, the Governor outlined his proposed budget for the State of Indiana for the next biennium. Should the proposal advance through the legislative process as proposed by the Governor, funding for the life sciences would be delayed or postponed, and all higher education institutions in Indiana would see a 4% drop in state funding for the next 2 years. Now that the Governor has presented his budget proposal, the Indiana General Assembly will work to pass their version of the state’s budget. The IU State Relations team will be working hard during the legislative session to build support among legislators for Indiana University and the Indiana Innovation Alliance.

Studies of African Diaspora have traditionally focused on the retention of cultural and linguistic remnants in the lives of African-descended peoples.

A new book by an Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) professor broadens the field of African Diaspora studies by analyzing political and economical ties among African-descended populations living in the Americas, the Caribbean and West Africa in the early 1920s.

Purdue School of Engineering and Technology has appointed Fred J. Rees as the new chair of the Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI.

Rees is professor of music and head of graduate studies in the Department of Music and Arts Technology. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor’s of Music and a performance certificate in double bass from the Crane School of Music (SUNY-Potsdam).

Wayne J. Hilson, Jr. serves as Director of Multicultural Academic Relations in the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).

Wayne received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and upon graduation went to work as a technical professional for Johnson Controls, Inc. with stints in Indianapolis and Chicago.

Baltimore Sun Editor to Direct New Sports Journalism Program at IUPUI

Baltimore Sun Editor and Senior Vice President Tim Franklin will join the IU School of Journalism in January.

Franklin will be the Louis A. Weil, Jr. Endowed Chair and will direct a new sports journalism program based in Indianapolis. The School of Journalism includes programs at the Bloomington and the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus.

Study May Change Way Law Enforcement Conducts Bomb Investigations

An assistant professor and students in the Forensic and Investigative Sciences program at IUPUI are involved in a study that may change the way law enforcement agencies conduct bomb investigations.

They, along with representatives from the Indiana State Police (ISP) Bomb Squad, Indiana State Police Forensic Science Laboratory, and Forensic ID, Inc., detonated on January 8, 2009, nine pipe bombs at a gravel pit in Noblesville.
