Art Classes for Everyone at Herron School of Art and Design

The Herron School of Art and Design every semester offers dozens of studio art classes for non-art majors at IUPUI.

Whether it is learning about jewelry design in the metalsmithing class or developing black and white photos, Herron has a class to fit various interests and schedules.

New courses for the spring 2009 semester include E205 Portrait and Life Painting, R201 Digital Documentation and Intro to Sculpture.

"Gender, Race, Religion in the 2008 Elections" is Focus of Bulen Symposium

How much or how little does the gender, race or religion of a political candidate matter?

On Nov. 10, 2008, Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis (IUPUI) will welcome national political pundits and local party leaders to the campus for a discussion on "Gender, Race and Religion in the 2008 Elections" at the Eighth Bulen Symposium on American Politics.

The Bulen Symposium is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, in the University Place Conference Center and Hotel, 850 W. Michigan St.

Symposium registration is $40 and includes entry to all sessions, breaks and lunch. Those wishing to sponsor IUPUI students for the sessions and luncheon are invited to do so for $40 per student.

Campus Center Announces Holiday/Semester Break Hours

The hours of operation for the Campus Center for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and the semester break are as follows:

The Campus Center will close for Thanksgiving at 5 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, and re-open at 7 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008.

The IUPUI Campus Center will observe winter break hours Saturday, Dec. 13 – Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009. Hours of operation during break will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The Campus Center will close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31, 2008.

The center will close Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Professors Dunker and Harris Make "Most-Cited" Research List

The journal "Biochemistry" recently listed articles authored by IUPUI professors Keith Dunker and Robert A. Harris among the most-cited articles from "a highly-cited leader" in the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology.

Dunker, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology; and professor of informatics, was recognized for his work on the article "Intrinsic Disorder in Transcription Factors." Published online in May 2006, the article can be viewed at: http://listmailer1.acs.org/t/22918/17858685/11856/0/.

Harris, professor of biochemistry, was a co-author of "Mitochondrial Matrix Phosphoproteome: Effect of ExtrxaMitochondrial Calcium." The February 2006 article is available online: http://listmailer1.acs.org/t/22918/17858685/11842/0/.

Genetics, Ethics and the Law Down Under: A Tasmanian Perspective

Dr. Mark Stranger, University of Tasmania, will be presenting "Genetics, Ethics and the Law Down Under: A Tasmanian Perspective," at the IU Center for Bioethics Predictive Health Ethics Research meeting at 3 p.m., Monday, Nov. 10, 2008. The presentation will be held at the IU Center for Bioethics, HITS building, 410 W. 10th St., Suite 3100.

Herron School of Art and Design Hosts Regional Student-Artists' Work

A new exhibit at the Herron School of Art and Design showcases the works of master's level art students across the Midwest.

Emphasizing the experience of graduate students' evolution of personal style, "Who Was I – What I’ll Be" features work from Master of Fine Arts students at urban Midwest universities. The exhibit explores how student-artists develop formal and conceptual skill-sets through immersive engagement in MFA curricula, and includes media ranging from prints and sculpture to furniture and film. "Who Was I – What I’ll Be" is on display through Nov. 16, 2008, in the Eleanor Prest Reese and The Robert B. Berkshire Galleries at Herron, 735 W. New York St.

The exhibit is free and open to the public.

"Chasing Justice" Author to Lecture

The man whose life story was part of the critically acclaimed play and movie "The Exonerated" will lecture at IUPUI on Friday, Nov. 7, 2008.

In 1977, Kerry Max Cook was arrested and convicted of capital murder. He spent two decades on death row before DNA testing exonerated him.

Cook, now an advocate for legal reform and author of "Let Nothing Keep You Down," and "Chasing Justice," will lecture at Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis at 5 p.m., on Nov. 7 in the Wynne Courtroom. A reception and book signing at 6 p.m. will follow Cook's lecture.

Reader's Digest cited "Chasing Justice" as "Book of the Year" in 2007. The book can be purchased at the reception and personally autographed by Cook. Books are $15 each, cash or checks will be accepted.

Gunderman Named Scholar-in-Residence

Dr. Richard Gunderman will serve as the first Scholar-in-Residence for the annual con-ference of Independent Sector. The conference takes place Nov. 9 – 11, 2008 in Philadel-phia and is expected to attract more than 1,000 leaders from the international non-profit community.

Founded in 1980 by former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare John W. Gardner and based in Washington, D.C., Independent Sector is the premier leadership forum for charities, foundations and corporate giving programs.

Gunderman is professor of radiology, pediatrics, medical education, philosophy, liberal arts and philanthropy at IUPUI.

As Scholar-in-Residence, Gunderman will facilitate two discussion sessions and write an article on the ethical dimensions of the conference’s proceedings; lead a 90-minute ethics session of the CEO track; and address participants at the meeting’s concluding plenary session. In addition, he will supervise the projects of two graduate students from Pitts-burgh’s Carnegie-Mellon University on fostering innovation and developing leadership talent.

Stress Busters Seminar

Trying to juggle classes, a job, family issues and everything else?? Feeling stressed?

The Department of Intramural and Recreational Sports is offering a free Stress Busters Seminar from noon to 1 p.m. on Dec. 3, 2008, in the Lilly Auditorium of University Library. Participants can learn simple, stress reduction techniques.

The seminar is free and open to all IUPUI students, faculty and staff.
