A Celebration of the Life of Nelson Mandela
Filmmaker Peter Davis of the United Kingdom will celebrate the 90th birthday of Nelson Mandela at IUPUI's Herron School of Art on Monday, Oct. 27. This event, presented by the IUPUI Multicultural Center, CAAAS, and the Office of International Affairs, is free and open to the public.
A reception featuring South African food will commence at 6:30 p.m. in the Herron Auditorium (HR101).
Davis, a world renowned documentarian of the South African Apartheid era, is a personal friend of the Mandela family. His lecture, entitled "Madiba and Me," will be followed by a showing of his latest film release called "Nelson Mandela: From Prisoner to President."
Davis' presentation will follow a short introduction by Professor Bessie House-Soremekun who will discuss fighting Apartheid both abroad and at home.
Also on Oct. 27, a showing of Davis’ films on South Africa will take place at the IUPUI Multicultural Center. These films include his classic "Generations of Resistance," "The White Laager," "Winnie Mandela," "In Darkest Hollywood," and others. The film festival will feature posters developed by Peter Davis in his long fight against the evils of Apartheid.

African American Life and History Association to Meet Nov. 1
The Indianapolis - Joseph A. Taylor Chapter of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History will hold a quarterly meeting at 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at Khepwr Institute, K I EcoCenter, 159 West 28th St. IUPUI faculty, staff and students are invited to attend.
Named after Joseph Taylor, the first dean of the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, the Indianapolis branch of the ASALH seeks to bring together community members, as well as academic and community historians and artists, to study and celebrate African American history and life.
The Nov. 1 program will include information about ASALH’s goals and membership; highlights of the last national ASALH conference; and a reading from "Black Star," by author and IUPUI Professor Ramla Bandele, Ph.D., and refreshments.
Bandele's book describes how activists in the African Diaspora formed a black merchant marine that was the basis of an economic enclave after World War I.
ASALH supports the student of African American history in homes, schools, universities, churches, government and other organizations. The local branch meets every three months. The first meeting in 2009 will be a panel discussion about Black Indiana History arranged by Donna Lucas Stokes, a community historian.

Baker-Ort Lecture Features Polio Eradication and Rotary Lecture
Dr. Robert S. Scott, trustee chair of the Rotary Foundation, is the featured speaker for the 4th Annual Baker-Ort Lecture in International Healthcare Philanthropy at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, in the University Library Auditorium.
Scott will discuss global health, Rotary’s success in the fight against polio, a new partnership with the Bill and Belinda Gates Foundation, and the challenges of reaching the final eradication of polio cases worldwide.
The lecture is free of charge and open to the public.

Karen Bravo to Speak on Transborder Labor at Oxford University Conference
Associate Professor Karen Bravo of the IU School of Law-Indianapolis will participate in a workshop at Oxford University on an issue of global significance – the social contract and the modern welfare state.
The IUPUI professor is among a select group of 16 international scholars that the Foundation for Law, Justice and Society at the University of Oxford, in association with Oxford's Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, has invited to the October 29-31, 2008, workshop. Entitled "Work, Employment and Industrial Relations in the New Social Contract," the workshop brings together scholars from the U.S., the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Australia, Belgium, Israel, and the Netherlands. The foundation selected Bravo based on her research on globalization, human trafficking and the transnational labor market. Bravo will present and discuss her paper "Transborder Labor Liberalization: A Path to Enforcement of the Global Social Contract for Labor?"

Spirit & Place Presents the Place of Engineering in Society Panel
A panel discussion on the impacts and obligations of engineers in society will take place from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at the IUPUI Campus Center, Room CE 450-B.
The event, part of the 2008 Spirit and Place Festival, will involve participants from
Engineering and Technology, Liberal Arts, Indianapolis Museum of Art and Fairview Presbyterian Church.
Topics for discussion include how engineering imagination interacts with, and affects, the goals, objectives, and imagination of the art, humanities, and spiritual communities. This will include topical questions dealing with today’s societal needs and will allow questions from the audience.
Supporters of this event include the Institute for American Thought
and the American Studies Program of the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.

IUPUI Health and Benefits Fair
On Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, Human Resources Administration will host the annual IUPUI Health and Benefits Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Campus Center.
The fair will remain open during the noon hour. Free blood pressure, cholesterol, bone density, glucose, vision/glaucoma and other health screenings will be available. The fair also includes various educational workshops, along with presentations by experts representing the Indiana University benefit plans.
