Expert to Speak on Arab Philanthropy

The Center on Philanthropy will host Dr. Barbara Ibrahim, director of the John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement at the University of Cairo, to speak about Arab philanthropy at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, in the Lilly Auditorium at the IUPUI University Library.

Ibrahim’s topic will be “Trends in Arab Philanthropy: Gulf Oil and the Emergence of New Philanthropies.”

Group Fitness Walking Available

The Department of Intramural and Recreational Sports is offering a fall walking class. Walk your way to fitness every Tuesday and Thursday at noon in the PE building on the Main Concourse.

IUPUI to Host Showing of LUNAFEST®: Short Films By...For...About Women®

LUNAFEST®, the fundraising film festival dedicated to promoting awareness about women’s issues, highlighting women filmmakers, and bringing women together in their communities, will be hosted by the Office for Women at IUPUI in Indianapolis on Oct., 10, 2008. A reception and silent art auction will take place at 6 p.m., followed by a showing of the films at 7 p.m. in Room 450 of the IUPUI Campus Center.

This unique film festival highlights women as leaders in society, illustrated through nine short films by women filmmakers. The films range from animation to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women’s health, motherhood, body image, sexuality, cultural diversity, and breaking barriers.

Tickets, $5 for students, $20 for general admission, are available for purchase at http://ofw.iupui.edu. Proceeds from LUNAFEST will benefit the Breast Cancer Fund and the Office for Women. For additional information, e-mail ksgrove@iupui.edu or call 317-278-3600.

Mesch Named Director of Women's Philanthropy Institute (WPI)

Debra Mesch has been named director of the Women’s Philanthropy Institute (WPI) at the Center on Philanthropy.

WPI’s comprehensive focus on women and philanthropy includes donor-centered education, research, and the dissemination of essential information.

Mesch is professor of public and nonprofit management in SPEA at IUPUI, and professor of philanthropic studies at the Center on Philanthropy. She will maintain her status as a faculty member for SPEA and the Center.

Natatorium's Aqua Fitness Class is a Success

The IU Natatorium had a great turnout for the free Aqua Fitness Class, held on Sept. 8, 2008. Dozens of new participants were able to experience the healthy benefits and the fun of Aqua Fitness. The Natatorium staff thanks all those who attended.

Aqua Fitness Class at the Natatorium is offered year-round, Monday through Friday, at several times throughout the day. For additional information, go to http://www.iunat.iupui.edu.

The Natatorium offers a 10% Discount for IUPUI employees.

Student Employment 201 Workshop

Looking for strategies and tactics for supervising students?

Student Employment 201, a new intermediate workshop, will be offered on Oct. 28, 2008, or Nov. 20, 2008. It is designed for supervisors that have some experience supervising student employees, and yet are looking for strategies and tactics for improvement.

Included in this workshop are: supervision basics, orientation, training and professional development, communication, encouragement and motivation, coaching to identify how to develop employees’ skills, and how to handle difficult situations.

Blomquist Reads at the Table

The Faculty Club will be hosting Reading at the Table featuring William Blomquist from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 15, 2008, in the UFCI.

The event will feature Blomquist's book, "Embracing Watershed Politics."
