After completing his graduate work in the U.S. as a Fulbright Scholar, he and his wife returned to his home country of Turkey. There he became a faculty member at the Middle East Technical Institute University. They returned to the states in 1977, avoiding the unstable political climate. Meanwhile, he started a new academic career as a visiting professor in the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology, IUPUI. During that time he served as dean, associate dean, assistant dean, division chairman, and provost for the Malaysia Program. He retired in 2010 after 33 years of service.
