1. IUPUI Day of Caring 2013
IUPUI's United Way Day of Caring is an annual campus tradition. At this year's Day of Caring, Sept. 27, teams of IUPUI students, faculty, staff and guests will volunteer at non-profits across greater Indianapolis. Please consider putting together a team of your co-workers, colleagues or classmates and spend a Friday volunteering. All IUPUI employees must receive permission from their supervisor.

3. IUPUI Regatta practices this weekend
Registration continues for registered IUPUI Regatta teams interested in practicing on the canal this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14 to 15. Registered teams can jump in a boat for a practice session and teams needing professional coaching can learn from canoeing experts from IU Outdoor Adventures. For more information on available practice times, please contact Jon Bell at belljon@umail.iu.edu. Please note that spots are limited and teams should contact Jon for scheduling details.

4. Fourth annual IUPUI Harvey Milk dinner

5. Watch for cyclists
For years, roads were built with only automobiles in mind – and the rules of the road were focused on them. But these days, with more cyclists on the road and more bike lanes being added to streets, it’s essential that drivers and cyclist alike understand the rules of the road.

6. Students for Concealed Carry host first educational event
We at Students for Concealed Carry will be hosting our first educational event of the year. We will have a guest speaker with years of experience in dealing with violent criminals as IMPD's Firearms Training Section Supervisor to speak about self-defense in general. We will discuss the importance of taking your safety seriously, seeking training, defensive options and the role a firearm can play in such situations. Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in Campus Center Room 307.

7. Office for Women Book Club to feature Sandberg's "Lean In"
The Office for Women is hosting another book club this year and the first selection is "Lean In" by Sheryl Sandberg. She is Chief Operations Officer of Facebook and she wrote this book urging women to take responsibility for stepping up and leaning in to leadership. Each discussion will be in the Board Room (Room 406) of the Campus Center at noon. This book will be discussed on two Tuesdays, Sept. 17 and Oct. 22. Bring a brown bag lunch and join us! 8. Congress to campus public forum!
Next week two former members of Congress, Nick Lampson (D-TX) and Steve Kuykendall (R-CA) will be visiting IUPUI's campus! On Monday Sept. 16 from 3 to 4:15 p.m. there will be a public forum discussion focused on constitutional and political issues. During this event you will have a chance to directly ask the Congressmen any questions you may have. There will also be FREE pizza! Please join us under the Business/SPEA breezeway by the Democracy Plaza chalkboards for this awesome event!
9. IU doc, researcher bikes 225 miles for Miles for Myeloma
Rafat Abonour, M.D., an oncologist and researcher at the IU Simon Cancer Center, begins his ninth annual Miles for Myeloma in Niles, Mich., on Friday, Sept. 27. He’ll travel 225 miles before crossing the finish line at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, near the NCAA Hall of Champions at White River State Park. All are welcome to attend the finish-line celebration.

12. South African scholar Allan Boesak at IUPUI on Sept. 24
Civility, Politics and Reconciliation: An Impossible Triangle? This event will be held on Sept. 24, 2013, in the Lilly Auditorium, IUPUI Library, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Distinguished Rev. Allan Boesak, anti-apartheid activist, leader of the World Alliance of Churches, patron of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in South Africa and theologian. He is also a recipient of the Robert Kennedy Human Rights Award and the Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Award.

13. Building a safer community
Please join the Sexual Assault Prevention Task Force for a campus-wide presentation on Bystander Empowerment and Sexual Assault Prevention. This presentation will focus on raising awareness with regard to sexual assault on college campuses, strategies for prevention and ways to be an active part of creating a safer IUPUI community. This presentation will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m. in Campus Center 264. All members of the IUPUI community are welcome to attend.

18. Improving the bicycling environment on campus
Have you been or do you know someone who has been a victim of bicycle theft on the IUPUI campus? Do you feel at ease leaving your bicycle unattended while in class? A group of design students at Herron is conducting research on the subject of bike security at IUPUI. This is your chance to speak up, whatever your perception and/or experience is. 25. Big Robot Concert Sept. 20
Big Robot, a computer-acoustic trio comprising faculty members in the IUPUI Music and Arts Technology Department, will celebrate the release of their debut multimedia album on Friday, Sept. 20 at the Irving Theater at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5. The event promises to be a mind-bending evening of music, electronics, video and interactivity. Sharing the stage with Big Robot will be cellist/composer Shannon Lee Hayden and harpist Erzsebet Gaal.

Apply now to participate in Center for Research and Learning Undergraduate Research Programs.

Programs currently accepting applications include the Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Institute (MURI) and the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Grants Program (UROP). The deadline for applications has been extended to Sept. 17, 2013.
CRL programs offer competitive stipends and give students the opportunity to work with a faculty mentor.
