6. New Campus Recreation hours

CORRECTION: The previous listing showed an incorrect date for the TRIP Showcase.

Mark your calendars for Sept. 16 for the IUPUI TRIP Community Showcase, as several of IUPUI'S distinguished faculty scholars present their translational research and illustrate how they improve people's lives. The Showcase will feature a presentation by the inaugural Bantz-Petronio Translating Research into Practice Award recipient, David Marrero, Ph.D.. Marrero will present on "Practical Approaches to Preventing Diabetes: What Actually Works."

8. InterVarsity Christian Fellowship events
InterVarsity Christian Fellowship will be hosting "Noodle Day" Wednesday, Aug. 28th from 4 to 6 p.m. in Taylor Courtyard. The event will consist of having a pool noodle fight until a team wins. After, dinner will be at Noodles and Company on Indiana Avenue. This event is free to attend but dinner will not be paid for by InterVarsity. 9. Women in Technology call out meeting

11. Paw's Pantry grand opening - a food pantry for IUPUI students

17. American Chemical Society (ACS) national meeting reception at IUPUI
Mark your calendars! To celebrate the 2013 American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting in Indianapolis, the IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning is hosting a reception on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. It will be held at the Center for Teaching and Learning office in University Library. 18. Excellence in Professionalism - applications now open!
The Office of Student Employment proudly presents the Excellence in Professionalism (EIP) series geared toward training and educating students on professionalism. This program is free and open to all undergraduate students. 19. New requirements for the Undergraduate Technical Communication certificate

In order to serve students better, the Technical Communication Program has revised requirements for the undergraduate TCM certificate.

The number of credit hours has remained at 19, but the new requirements focus more on the technical aspects of technical communication and allow greater flexibility in course selection.

The Certificate offers coursework designed to complement bachelor's degrees in many fields as students prepare for entry-level positions in technical communication.

21. GU2IUPUI Institute: October 9 to 11, 2013
The application deadline for this graduate and professional student development institute is Aug. 31. The Institute is for prospective applicants from underrepresented and under-served backgrounds with interest and eligibility in pursuing a master's or doctoral program offered by IU or Purdue at IUPUI. Selected participants receive a scholarship that covers travel and program related expenses. Participants meet faculty, tour program facilities, sit in on classes and learn to develop successful apps.

22. Leadership Launch Program for first-year students

Leadership Launch is a new program that will equip first-year students with the tools necessary to become a transformational leader creating positive change on campus, in the community and in the world. The Department of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery is honored to welcome internationally renowned special guest speaker, Daniel Alam, MD. Dr. Alam was the lead surgeon and protocol designer of the multidisciplinary team that performed the first U.S. face transplant surgery. 26. ETTA Fall Conference - educational training for teaching assistants
This conference will be an all-day event with a combination of session formats including interactive workshops, group work, experiential learning and even games. Lunch and snacks will be provided. AFRO-A306 Class #24826 AFRICAN DIASPORA: GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES (3CR)

The course examines the shared cultural, political, social and intellectual responses to the transoceanic experiences of African diasporic populations. It also utilizes interdisciplinary tools and perspectives to understand the impact of colonialism, imperialism and globalization on African populations of the United States, Canada, Great Britain and selected Western European nations during the modern era.

29. Free HIV/STD testing
Do you want to get tested for free? Free HIV/STD testing is held once a month on a Thursday on the IUPUI campus. The first testing of the fall semester will be Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Campus Center (CE) 213. Testing is free, safe and confidential and conducted by the Bellflower Clinic and the Damien Center. Tests include HIV, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea. No appointment necessary. 30. Mindfulness-based stress reduction class
An eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course (MBSR) will be offered by Kathleen Beck-Coon, M.D., on campus starting Sept. 12. MBSR is a scientifically supported integrative mind-body health class that cultivates mindful awareness through the practice of mindfulness mediation, yoga and didactic teaching about stress reduction. Due to an overwhelming number of submissions, as well as space restrictions, Jagnews will no longer publish research studies. All clinical trials at IUPUI can be accessed at the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute Studies site.
