Health information professionals play a critical role in maintaining, collecting, interpreting, analyzing and protecting the data that health care providers rely on for research and to deliver quality care. They are experts in coding and classification systems. These professionals interact with clinical, financial, administrative, information technology and legal staff to interpret data for patient care, research, statistical reporting, planning and database content development.
The length of the program consists of 62 semester hours of prerequisite course work plus two years (60 credit hours) of professional course work. The professional component of the program is offered in the junior and senior years of a Bachelor of Science undergraduate degree. Admission to the professional program is competitive; therefore, completion of prerequisites does not guarantee admission to the program.
For students admitted to University College or another IUPUI academic school other than Informatics, a student must meet the following requirements to certify into the School of Informatics:
Program graduates can serve as directors, managers, consultants, data managers, data analysts, quality improvement professionals, government review agents and information privacy or security officers. Health information administrators enjoy job placement in a broad range of settings including physician practices, health care facilities, information system facilities, software companies, government agencies, pharmaceutical companies and consulting firms. Graduates of the program are eligible to seek registration as Registered Health Information Administrators by successfully passing a national qualifying examination offered by the American Health Information Management Association. Employment opportunities are excellent.
