IUPUI is Indiana's premier urban research university. The campus enrolls more than 30,000 students in 21 schools and academic units.
Physical Education is the study of how the human body is affected by exercise and sport. The curriculum provides for movement skill and fitness education, and for early, frequent, and continuous teaching experiences in school and community settings. In this major you will learn to teach and supervise individual and team sports; demonstrate sports techniques; analyze physical capabilities and needs of students; and administer corrective exercise and physical conditioning. Students will become capable of analyzing, synthesizing, and applying scientific knowledge to physical education in practice.
For students admitted to University College or another IUPUI academic school other than Physical Education, a student must meet the following requirements to certify into the School of Physical Education:
* Certification to the School of Physical Education is not the same as admission to the Teacher Education Program which requires a separate formal application along with additional course and testing requirements.
This program will lead to a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education degree and Indiana teaching certification in health education and physical education ("dual licensure") at the elementary, junior high/middle school, and high school levels.
The Adapted physical education program will prepare the physical educator to design and develop programs for special populations in the school and community setting. Upon completion of the program, the student will have the opportunity to earn dual certification in physical education and adapted physical education.
