Are you concerned about the safety of our nation's food supply? What about the air we breathe, the water we drink, or other types of hazards people are exposed to at home and work? Students pursuing SPEA's major in environmental health science are trained to address these and other pressing environmental health problems through a curriculum that blends science, public health, management, and policy.
SPEA also offers a minor in Environmental Health Science and an Area Certificate in Environmental Studies. All undergraduates at IUPUI, regardless of major, can strengthen their preparation for the global workforce by adding a minor or certificate in an environmental specialty to their undergraduate degree. The minor and Area Certificate provide especially attractive options for students in majors related to science, health, policy, business, journalism, and general studies.
For admission to SPEA, students must have completed 12 credit hours on the IUPUI campus, earn a C or better in ENG W131 English Composition, carry a 2.0 previous semester GPA, and carry 2.0 cumulative GPA. If students have taken 12 credit hours of major courses, they must have a 2.3 SPEA major GPA.
SPEA’s Environmental Health Science graduates can be found working for a variety of public, nonprofit, and private organizations. This program will prepare students for careers as Environmental Health Specialists, Air and Water Quality Managers, Food Safety Inspection Officers, Hazardous Waste Managers, Soil Conservation Technicians, Water Resource Planners, Industrial Hygienists, Safety Specialists, Field Scientists and Technicians, Consultants, Environmental Lobbyists, and many others.
The Environmental Health Science program requires a three credit hour internship to meet graduation requirements. To complete these requirements, students must record at least 240 working hours on the job. Students will also complete a final paper to receive credit.
