Medical students honored a long-standing tradition this weekend during Spring House Calls 2012. The service learning project connects students with communities that are like those where they will work during their careers, and provide springtime beauty at the same time.

Students at this home spruced up shrubs and flower beds.
The students have an opportunity to meet the residents at their work sites.
It won't be long before spring turns these small plants and seeds into full-blown beauty.
Preparation starts with removing weeds and older plants, and developing a plan.
The students find themselves surrounded by the 'tools of the trade' of gardeners.
Mulch and other items are keys to a beautification project.
A little direction from residents is a big help, too.
A little 'elbow grease' goes a long way toward success.

While flower beds are the starting point, flower pots wait their turn.
It helps to take a little 'off the top' of shrubs.
Each empty pot represents a transplanted source of future joy.
