More than 100 Chancellor's Scholars worked to prepare the area.
Most of the day involved 'double-digging' to lay out IUPUI's second garden.
Breaking ground is hard work ...
With the Indy skyline as a backdrop, the students set up rows and patches for the food that will help the Global Peace Initiatives Food ...
The new garden, which will greatly expand IUPUI's ability to help others, is south of New York Street and near the river walk.
An axe can come in handy, even for a 'farmer' ...
The students were guided in the effort by DIGS (Developing IUPUI Gardens Sustainably).
Honors College Dean Jane Luzar (black jacket) watched the garden take shape ...
... and even found time to answer some questions from river walkers curious about what was happening.
Preparation requires all kinds of tools ...
... but mostly, it's shovels and elbow grease.
The students double-dug 30 beds covering 1,400 square feet.
They also moved 12 cubic yards of compest to help ready the ground for a fall cover crop.
