Purdue School of Engineering & Technology
Matt Syrus may have grown up in a small town, but the IUPUI junior dreams big dreams - he plans to turn his education from the Purdue School of Engineering & Technology into a construction company owned by he and his brother Dan, a landscape architect.
Matt, recently honored as one of IUPUI's Top 10 male students for 2004-05, is pursuing a dual degree from E&T - one in organizational leadership and supervision, the other in civil engineering technology - and a minor in human resource management.
Construction isn't the only passion that drives Matt, whose faith in God leads him to volunteer regularly in community activities and for the Emmanuel Church of Greenwood. The Center Grove High School graduate also volunteers his time and skills for Habitat for Humanity, the United Way Day of Caring and mission trips to Haiti. After graduation, he wants to return to that Caribbean nation to build homes, schools and churches.
Matt loves working with younger kids. He has been a middle school mentor the past two years in through IUPUI's College Preparatory Initiates Program, and as a 21st Century Scholarship recipient has helped incoming freshman and sophomores make an easier transition from high school to college life. And even after he begins his professional career in construction, Matt plans to work with his church's youth ministry program.
He also plays the guitar and sings, teaming with girlfriend Alissa to lead worship for the middle school class at their church. Matt leads the Exchange Youth Band and hunts, fishes, camps out, travels and hangs out with friends.
