IU School of Liberal Arts
Jason Gabehart, a senior communication studies major in the IU School of Liberal Arts, plans to make a career out of working with children and public service, a passion he has honed at IUPUI as a Sam Jones Community Service Scholar.
Gabehart is considering law school to serve as a child advocate, or working in non-profit organizations that support children. As a Jones Scholar, Gabehart has worked with the Indianapolis Police Athletic League and with IUPUI's nationally renowned Center for Service and Learning to coordinate both campus service learning programs and student-focused volunteerism.
As a past president and member of the Alpha Phi Omega service organization at IUPUI, Gabehart has worked as a volunteer with children and adults with development disabilities at Damar Services. He has helped organize the IUPUI Riley Hospital for Kids Dance Marathon, various campus and city clean-up operations, the annual campus-wide Jam the Jaguars Bus food drive, the Martin Luther King Jr. "Day On" volunteer event and other projects to improve life on campus and in the community.
The Indianapolis native also made an impact on campus life by organizing a voter registration drive on campus that produced more than 800 new voters for the 2004 presidential election from among IUPUI students, staff and faculty.
