For Ericka Wheeler, keeping a finger on the pulse of student life on the IUPUI campus is more than just a hobby - it's her job, not to mention her passion.
Few students are more "plugged in" than Ericka, a senior and School of Journalism major who also serves as the leader of The Sagamore Online. In that role, she is responsible for knowing the people, events and trends that keep the campus - which is the size of a small Hoosier city - flowing on a day-to-day basis.
The Indianapolis native, a graduate of Ben Davis High School, already has built an intriguing resume to go with her academic work. She has worked for The Indianapolis Recorder in print and was an intern for WISH-TV (Channel 8) news.
In her spare time, Ericka has been a passionate participant in city life, serving as a volunteer for the Wheeler Boys & Girls Club and for Noble of Indiana, as a mentor for the Center for Leadership Development and as a board member for the Kings Charter School. She won the Society of Professional Journalists' "Best Consumer Reporter" award last spring, and also earned awards from the Wheeler Club and the Indianapolis Black Chamber of Commerce.
