Chen, the associate dean of research in the Purdue School of Engineering & Technology, is the director of IUPUIšs Advanced Vehicle Technology Institute, which is heavily involved in leading-edge hybrid vehicle technology.

Chen was a 1991 National Science Foundation Award winner and holds patents for visual monitoring systems for home health care services and for battery state-of-charge using neural network architecture.

He has received several commendations and honors, both for his teaching expertise (including a 1998 Indiana University Teaching Excellence Recognition Award) and his research (the schoolšs own A. Max Distinguished Professor Award for Outstanding Research in 2000).

In addition to his research work in hybrid vehicle technology, Chen has broad research interests that include real-time digital motion and motor control, robotics and automation, applied computation intelligence and optimizing telecommunications networks and multimedia systems.
