Fall, 2007 - Vol. I Issue 3
Welcome from the Vice Chancellor For Student Life, Karen Whitney
Karen Whitney, Ph.D.
Vice Chancellor For Student Life & Diversity
Building upon last year's good diversity work under Chancellor Bantz' leadership, several critical efforts will punctuate our efforts this year. Most prominent is a search for a full-time campus diversity officer. The position of vice chancellor for diversity, equity, and inclusion (VCDEI) has been established. The search is under way to recruit the first person who will serve in this position as a full-time campus diversity officer. (for more see http://www.iupui.edu/administration/search/vc_diversity).
Additionally, a team of students, faculty and staff has been appointed to establish a multicultural center at IUPUI. Last spring, Engineering and technology professor Sam White chaired a committee that has prepared a conceptual design for a multicultural center. In July 2007, a follow-up committee was assembled to implement the development of the center. The plan calls for renovating University College space that will be vacated by January 2008. The architectural firm of Blackburn and Associates has been retained to work with this effort to configure space to meet the needs of the center.
These are but two of the many efforts underway this year to advance our campus diversity vision, mission and goals. It’s going to be a great year for diversity at IUPUI.

IU School of Medicine Commitment to Diversity
As the new academic year begins the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) Diversity Council has already geared up to plan and hold some of its signature events around diversity at IUSM. The Council provides a forum for inspiring and creating awareness around diversity. One such forum is the wildly successful annual Diversity Week featuring notable physicians and leaders in the field of science and medicine such as Mae C. Jemison and neurosurgeon Ben Carson. Other events promoting diversity include the Westside Health Fair in October and the Student National Medical Association annual picnic welcoming first year medical students, incoming graduate students, and new residents.

IU School of Medicine Hires Director to Oversee Multicultural Affairs
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana University School of Medicine has named Krystal Ardayfio as the director of the newly established Office of Multicultural Affairs.
A graduate of Harvard University, Ms. Ardayfio previously worked in economic development at Nuestra Comunidad Development Corporation in Boston and as a guest lecturer for the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship.
