Overview What is referred to as “social studies” in middle school or high school actually comprises content from seven different university departments: history, political science/government, geography, economics, sociology, anthropology, and psychology. At present, individuals interested in teaching social studies at the secondary level major in “social studies education” and earn a B.S. from the School of Education. Requirements combine broad-based work in various academic departments, and professional education and student teaching in the education department.
