IUPUI is where IMPACT is made every day. We invite you to explore with us IUPUI’s "IMPACT of No Impact" through a week of Common Theme activities. No Impact Week is your chance to explore the impact that your daily actions have on the environment. Whether you are new to the green movement and just want to explore further or you are ready to push your green lifestyle to the next level, there is a place for you! Please see our resource guide [PDF] for local and national resources to help you live green.
You can form a team or use this opportunity to make new friends- either way, get ready to Go Green!
Light Green Participants
Are you unsure of how “green” you want to be but you are interested in learning more? Check out the Common Theme Facebook group and join us for the following activities throughout No Impact Week:
Monday, October 4: Trash/Consumption Day
- Free Swap Market- Got stuff? Want to get rid of it? Clean out your closets and bring your items to campus to give away for reuse as a part of IUPUI’s first free market, in partnership with IndyFreeSwap. this event is like a garage sale…except free! If you don’t have stuff, consider your skills and talents that you can offer, like tutoring or guitar lessons. Contact Katy Kaesebier, katykaes@iupui.edu to let us know what you are planning to bring or offer. Our goal is to bring together the IUPUI community in a spirit of giving, while also lessening IUPUI’s environmental impact as a part of No Impact Week. UC Courtyard, 11 am- 1 pm
Rain location: Campus Center Atrium - Watch the Story of Stuff screening and stay for a discussion about the effects of consumption with IUPUI political philosophy professor Jasper Sumner and anthropology professor Paul Mullins.
Democracy Plaza, 12 pm- 1 pm - Barnes & Noble @ IUPUI: Swap used books that proceeds will go to BackPack Attack - for a re-usable shopping bag (First 50)
Tuesday, October 5: Transportation Day
- "Alternative Transportation in Indianapolis” panel - Are you tired of spending time searching for parking before class or work? Join Bryan Luellen from IndyGo, Anita Beverly from Central Indiana Commuter Services and IUPUI’s own Sarah Lang and Mona Kheiry as they come together to discuss with the IUPUI community alternative means of transportation.
Campus Center 309, 12:15-1:15 pm - Free Bicycle Maintenance and Repair with Nate Blair from the Bike Line in Broad Ripple- Bring your bicycle by for a free check up!
Democracy Plaza, 10 am- 2 pm - Barnes & Noble @ IUPUI: Present your S-pass for 25% off the Knights Apparel t-shirts
Wednesday, October 6: Food Day
- Farmer’s Market Visit: Visit the City Market by taking the IndyGo Red Line. There will be a healthy cooking food demonstration from 12-1:30 pm. Students, don’t forget to pick up your S-Pass first to ride for free! Faculty and staff can purchase Indy Go tickets at the Jagtag office. A group leader will meet the group at the Red Line stop right outside the Campus Center on University Blvd.
Groups will leave at 10 am and 11:30 am at the Red Line stop on the southeast corner of the Campus Center.
Meeting time and location TBD - Smoothies Demonstration: Join the Student Wellness Coalition, (SWELL) for SWELL Smoothies. Raw food chef Audrey Barron will teach students, faculty and staff how to prepare fruit and vegetable smoothies. Free samples and recipes will be offered.
Campus Center 305, 12-1:30 PM - Barnes & Noble @ IUPUI: Buy a book off of the No Impact week display and receive a free pastry from the cafe
Thursday, October 7: Energy Day
- Renewable Energy Demonstrations on IUPUI’s campus
UC Courtyard, Tour times, TBD - Download the Go Green Gadget to measure how much carbon dioxide you save simply by turning off your computer. Contact your IT administrator for downloading permission or with any questions.
- Barnes & Noble @ IUPUI: Bring in a travel coffee mug and get it filled for a discount
Friday, October 8: Water Day
- Addicted to Plastic: We will be showing the award-winning film "Addicted to Plastic", which not only highlights our enormous consumption of plastic, but also plastic's impact on our oceans and waterways. A speaker will also discuss how we can become better world citizens by protecting our waterways through ethical consumption and waste-disposal as it relates to the key issues addressed in the film. Professor Ingrid Ritchie from the School of Medicine Department of Health and Falon French from the Hoosier Environmental Council will be joining for a post-movie discussion.
Lilly Auditorium, 1-3 PM - Barnes & Noble @ IUPUI: Visit the cafe and tell us how you are decreasing water usage to receive a water bottle - (first 100)
Dark Green Teams/Participants
Have you been looking for a way to decrease your environmental impact? Do you want to meet others who care about the environment as much as you do? Form a Dark Green Team or join No Impact Week as an individual. Each day we will build on the day before with the goal of being impact free by Friday! Being “Dark Green” for the week will give you the chance to be more involved with No Impact Week through special events planned just for you! As a Dark Green participant, you will be able to participate in all of the Light Green and Dark Green activities listed on the website, ultimately experiencing a greater sense of community. Our hope is that through participating in the many activities during NIW, you will take a deeper look into the environmental impact of your lifestyle. See below for a schedule of events for the week:
