Common Theme Project

Film

There are many documentary and feature films that explore issues related to this year's Common Theme. Anne Roberts, Mary F. Crisler Scholar in the School of Liberal Arts, has compiled this list, which includes informational websites.

Five of these films-"Heat," "Garbage Warrior," "The Garden," "Fuel," and "FLOW"-will be showing as part of the 2009-2010 Sustainability Film Series, sponsored by Student Activities Programming Board and Go Green, IUPUI! See the Common Theme calendar for details. There will be a companion event on Feb. 11, 2010 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. There will be a screening of "Who Killed the Electric Car," followed by a talk by the film-maker, Chris Paine. Stayed Tuned for more information.

If you know of additional films related to the Common Theme, please send the title, description and other relevant information to Anne Roberts: annrober@iupui.edu.

Since happiness has increased with income in the past, we assumed it would do so in the future.  However, it is a fallacy. McKibben’s aim in Deep Economy is relatively modest. It is to change minds, to present a new mental model of the possible. He suggests more progress toward local economies. His analysis of localization for food, radio, and energy, can be applied to almost any commodity. If we start thinking a little differently we can do the same for our democracy.
