The Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium, created in the city of Indianapolis' drive to become the "Amateur Sports Capital of the World," fittingly bears the name of the late Carroll, whom many IUPUI people consider the campus's "greatest cheerleader." Carroll, who was killed tragically in a 1992 plane crash, was a former Indianapolis deputy mayor and special assistant to Sen. Richard G. Lugar. Carroll's spirit—he tirelessly supported IUPUI's mission as both an academic and community research institution—is an appropriate source of inspiration for athletes who compete on the stadium's track and field facilities and its soccer field, striving to improve and achieve.
