Achieving Impact: IUPUI in the State, The Nation, & The World
IUPUI's destiny has always been linked to with central Indiana, but IUPUI also has impact statewide, nationally, and internationally.
We made this explicit in crafting IUPUI's new mission statement as part of IU's mission differentiation project. IUPUI pledged to advance its mission by advancing Indiana and beyond
— IUPUI Chancellor Charles Bantz
Whether researching societies problems, engaging students in community service, or building community programs, academics and research regularly intersect with the greater community at IUPUI.
IUPUI received a United States Presidential Award for exceptional accomplishments in community service in 2006. This is not the first, but the fifth time in the past two years that IUPUI has received national recognition for the service to community and collaborative community partnerships that distinguish this urban campus.
IUPUI has been designated as 1 of 25 urban institutions called "Saviors of our Cities." The Princeton Review, Campus Compact, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and U.S. News and World Report also have honored IUPUI for collaboration with its communities of stakeholders.
Read about just some of the ways IUPUI engages the community:
Creating Community Change
Researchers from the Center for Urban & Multicultural Education works to research ways to improve urban education, and translate those findings into practice in the community.
The Spirit & Place Festival, founded by the IU School of Liberal Arts, engages the Indianapolis community through dozens of community-based events each year. The festival is a national model for engaging arts, humanities, and religion in collaborative action to promote respect for diversity, thoughtful reflection, public imagination, and enduring change in the communities where we live.
Public & Environmental Affairs professor Roger Jarjoura not only teaches criminal justice, he created community programs to help youth offenders transition in their release back in the community.
Meaningful International Partnerships
IUPUI students, faculty and staff regularly participate in international conversations through the Global Crossroads Laboratory. IUPUI students take courses with students at other universites, through real-time videoconferencing with universities in Israel, Iran, Indonesia, and other countries.
In March 2007, IUPUI formed a unique partnership with Sun Yat Sen University, one of the top 10 universities in China. IUPUI and Sun Yat Sen University are aiming at a long-term collaboration that advances the internationalization of each institution while also providing vital linkages for the communities in which each is located. Not only will such comprehensive partnerships strengthen the collective capacity of each partner for research, teaching, and civic engagement, they will also infuse their respective communities with a spirit of international collaboration and interdependence.
A humanitarian response to the African HIV/AIDS pandemic by the IU School of Medicine and its education partner in Kenya, Moi University School of Medicine, has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
The program, AMPATH (Academic Model for Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS) was only a concept seven years ago. Through the efforts of its field director, Dr. Joseph Mamlin, and faculty involved in the IU-Kenya Partnership, AMPATH now treats 42,000 HIV-positive Kenyan patients at 19 clinical sites throughout western Kenya. It also provides food assistance to 20,000 people, and job and agricultural training to thousands more.
