Greetings from IUPUI

October 2007

IUPUI proudly joins in a weeklong celebration of Indiana University, October 13-21, which includes the inauguration of Michael A. McRobbie as IU’s 18th president. The inauguration takes place on Thursday, October 18, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM, in the IU Auditorium, Bloomington. The event is open to the public.

Several IUPUI-based events are part of “Celebrate IU Week.”

On Sunday, October 14, 4:00 – 5:30 p.m., University Place Conference Center, 850 West Washington Street, in Indianapolis, the IUPUI-Kenya partnership will be a feature of a panel discussion I am moderating titled “Higher Education: A Change Agent for International Development.”

  • President Michael McRobbie will provide a welcome and introductory remarks.
  • Vice Chancellor of Moi University Richard K. Mibey joins IU Professor Emeritus of Medicine Joseph J. Mamlin to talk about the Academic Model for the Prevention and Treatment of HIV (AMPATH) and other IU-Moi collaborations.
  • Luis Gil Borja, Rector of the Autonomous University of the State of Hidalgo, Mexico, joins Associate Professor of Dentistry E. Angeles Martinez-Mier, who is on the IUPUI faculty and codirects the Calnali International Service-Learning Project, to talk about a nine-year partnership to improve the preparation of health providers and other graduates to care for Spanish-speaking populations on both sides of the border. A multidisciplinary team of IU and Hidalgo students and faculty in medicine, nursing, public health, social work, and dentistry participate in research, training, and international service learning programs.

Incidentally, the Bi-National/Cross-Cultural Health Enhancement Center was designated one of 19 new IUPUI Signature Centers earlier this year. It will enhance the existing partnership’s focus on issues of recent immigrants and their native rural communities in Mexico.

A reception follows the discussion. Both events are free and open to the public, but reservations are requested. RSVP to mmcfarli@iupui.edu or 317-274-7400.

On Monday, October 15, noon - 1:30 p.m., in the University Place Conference Center, IUPUI launches the Translating Research into Practice (TRIP) Initiative. Professor Sandra Petronio facilitates a discussion of translational research. (Free and open to the public. Lunch is provided. RSVP to mmcfarli@iupui.edu or 317-274-7400).

Hear from this panel of IUPUI faculty on how they translate research into practice to improve people's lives in Indiana and beyond:

  • Professor of Nursing Joan E. Haase, R.N., Ph.D., Adolescent Resilience Model (ARM): “Finding Meaning: Helping Teens through Their Cancer Journey.”
  • Professor of Engineering and Technology Ali Jafari, CyberLab, Creating Collaborative Web Solutions for Better E-Learning: “Using Technology to Solve Everyday Problems.”
  • Associate Professor of Public and Environmental Affairs Roger Jarjoura, Ph.D., Aftercare for Indiana through Mentoring (AIM): “Connecting Juvenile Offenders with Student Mentors.”
  • Associate Professor of Medicine Glenda Westmoreland, M.D., M.P.H., Geriatrics Education Network of Indiana (GENI): “Improving Quality of Life for Older Adults.”
  • Associate Professor of Liberal Arts Elizabeth Wood, Ph.D., Enhancing the Museum Experience: “Making Learning Fun at the Children’s Museum.”

On Wednesday, October 17, 4:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., IUPUI Professor of Earth Sciences Gabriel Filippelli presents a lecture titled “Rapid Climate Change,” part of the Cutting Edge Lecture Series, at the University Library. Dr. Filippelli will explore how climate change affects food production and how policy-makers armed with sound science can minimize the societal impacts of climate change.

Students, prospective and current, will be visiting campus for events throughout the week, ranging from Dental Day to Honors Scholars Day for Prospective Students to Fall Campus Day, an open house for people interested in attending IUPUI for undergraduate or graduate study.

Information about these and all other “Celebrate IU” events can be found at www.iupui.edu/celebrateiu. We hope you’ll be part of the celebration!
