Sarah Evans Barker has served as a judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana since 1984, including as chief judge from 1994 through 2000. Previously, she was U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, an assistant U.S. Attorney, and an associate and partner in the law firm Bose McKinney and Evans. She also was a legislative assistant and special counsel in Washington, D.C.

Judge Barker is president-elect of the Federal Judges Association and was appointed by Chief Justice Rehnquist to serve on a special study committee on Judicial Conduct and Disability. She has served in many capacities for Indiana University, including being elected a Distinguished Alumna and the recipient of an honorary degree. She is a board member of Clarian Health Partners, Inc., Hanover College, and the Indiana Historic Society. Judge Barker is also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Indianapolis; the Indiana, Indianapolis and Federal Bar Associations; the Lawyers Club; the Indiana Academy; and the Morgantown United Methodist Church.

Judge Barker received her B.S. from Indiana University and her J.D. from American University Law School.
